Plow plane restore

Have cleaned the body’s sides of old nasty varnish. Using just a hand plane set as fine as I could set it.

and then flattened to sole with a #78 rebate plane. Seems the was a LOT of wear and tear near the front

Now, it is all flat and square to the skate. Skate has been ccleaned up a bit. It will remain on the plane, since things might move a bit if it comes off.

Fence was also cleaned up, to remove all the old varnish. The rods had a problem, though. Both had split where the old screws were. One was BADLY split apart, the bracket was even coming off the rod. The other bracket was an easy fix. Just pump a bit of glue in it, install the screw, and clamp it up for a while. The other bracket was too far gone, so, a trip to the wood pile produced a scrap of clear grained Black Walnut. It was a bit thicker than needed, and longer than needed. A sabresaw to rough cut the blank out. Planed a bit to get the thickness a little closer. Fitted the router with a 3/8” roundover bit. left the router sitting on it’s top, on the bench. One hand to hold the router, one hand to hold the part. Edges were now rough shaped.. Then a lot of trial fits, and going to the belt sander to adjust things. and so on. Got it to fit all the way through the plane’s body. Next a pilot hole was drilled. Then a test fit of the old screw.

All set to install to the fence, after a finish is applied. That is the old, split up rod and bracket.

Next, a wedge for the iron. Back to the scrap pile….ah, a thin piece of old Barn Rafter QSWO. Traced out a wedge design, using both the original (what was left of it) and another wedge. Sabresaw again to cut it out. Then came all that shave it down to thickness, check for fit, shave a bit more…..until it fit the way it was supposed to..WHEW

Iron needs a “V” groove milled in it’s backside, to match the “V” on the end of the skate. That way the iron is locked into the middle. Still have to finish stripping off the old varnish, and apply a new better finish. The tote may, or may not get a little work, seems a part of the horn is MIA….

Did make quite a mes in the Dungeon Shop today

Figures, the cleaning crew only shows up on Mondays….
