After finally starting to feel like my tiny one car garage is a shop I’ve started working on improving the shop. The used Ridgid 4510 table saw I have didn’t come with the riving knife, apparently the previous owner tossed it with the blade guard, and I thought it would be a good idea to have one. It was difficult to find a replacement to purchase online, so I decided that I would try to make one.
I ordered a 12”x12” 1/8” sheet of aluminum and made a couple of “first drafts” out of some plywood to try and develop a template. I only had Sunday to work on anything this weekend, so I was pretty sure I would be able to punch it out. Once I got the fit right and a shape I liked I traced the template onto the sheet of aluminum and cut it out with a jigsaw. After a whole lot of fine tuning and shaping its in the saw, aligned, and works beautifully.
With the riving knife done I started cutting some pieces of hard maple and peruvian walnut to make a couple of mallets. The previous weekend I made a few zero clearance inserts for my table saw as well as a crosscut sled. Things are progressing slowly, but well I think. I’ve been overwhelmed with all of the projects I want to get done lately so I had to make a to-do list, and it has helped reduce my confusion and anxiety.
