My hand plane journey #3: Repairs

The only major defect is c hip missing from the top of the tote. I was going to pass on repairing the tote mainly because there was no way I could duplicate the wood, and I really wanted a clear finish on the tote and knob. However the top of the tote was very uncomfortable in my hand. So I glued a piece of red oak to the top, and then shaped it. Lee Valley has templates of the various totes for Stanley planes.


I also sanded flat the sole of the plane. It was very flat to begin with, and I took it up to 320 grit. The end result:


I then sharped the blade on my Worksharp:
