Today was a pretty productive day in the shop overall. I wanted to start by getting those two bread loaves inlaid into my Maple panels so I can finish the doors and move on to the dovetails. As I mentioned in my last post, I like to use the router a lot during this process, both for inlaying the marquetry and for cleaning it up after the glue dries.
The first step is to stick the assembly in place with double-sided tape and trace the perimeter with an x-acto knife.
Once that’s done, I use a 5/8” straight router bit followed by a 1/8” to carefully clean out the area where the bread loaf will be glued. I replace the plate on the router with an acrylic shop-made plate that measures 13”x13”. This allows plenty of visibility so I don’t bump my x-acto lines (although I did that very thing today—looks like my panels are going to be 1/16” thinner than I thought!!) Then I clean up the edges with the knife and some carving chisels.
Once I had the pieces glued up and “cooking” in the clamps, I turned my attention to the Walnut for the actual boxes. Here’s a picture of the lumber as I pulled it off the pile. I had to cut it pretty small to get around some of the splits and knots in the wood, but I finally got the ten pieces I needed glued up and ready to go.
