Wonderful Things #2: Sort of a Chest with Slideout Draw Trays

She Who Must be Obeyed spake thus; Seek ye out the land of Ebay and secure these 40 vintage wooden trays that have been made known to me and bring them hence. Thereafter shall ye build a cabinet such that it will hold all my supplies of craft that I might practice on them. And ye shall make it so it fits

in a specific place and is neither too large nor too small.

As She had spoken, so was She obeyed.

The draws came from an old police station in the town of Preston (Watling Street Road Police Station) that had been rescued prior to demolition. The carcase is, as ever, in the Norm style using 18mm ply. The runners are of oak from an old kitchen cabinet door and are inset into the sides – 33 drawers = 66 grooves. I made a jig that rode in the previous groove to keep the spacing equal. The whole item had to have an “olde shoppe” feel hence the elongated top. The unit is stained “Mid-Oak” and is a little bright at the moment but it will darken with age.

The remaining 7 draws will be made into a storage rack for the home office.

PS Why Watling Street Road? Watling Street is an old Roman road, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watling_Street
