Air Cleaner Design

Greetings Ladies and Gents,
I’ll try to avoid my bad habit of making a short story long as I want to be respectful of your time, want to capture your interest and hope to get your input.
My step son hooked me up with a furnace “squirrel cage” from some replacement job he did. The unit is very close to 17”X17”X17” again. The motor is not belt driven, and it is a 1/3 hp Lennox that can go some 17 hundred RPM, I think I read on the label. Not sure how that translates to CFM but I suspect it will be adequate to build a shop air cleaner unit.
There are many fine units in the annals of Lumberjocks. There also are great writings on the benefits and science behind them. For instance, Bob 42 educated me, maybe some of you as well, with his blog found under http://lumberjocks.com/Bob42/blog/6987. I also have had the opportunity to see first hand a unit built by my friend and fellow lumberjock Bert which is cited on this entry, http://lumberjocks.com/topics/45331, and can be seen in his projects page. The unit seen on this blog by J Wags, http://lumberjocks.com/JWags/blog/22828 reflects what I want to do. Have my unit be a double duty, at least, and fill in as a table saw off feed table.
I found interesting the design Mr. Wags used. He showed great use of the rubber crutch foot (at least that’s what they look like to me) an item I’ve become close with as I recuperate from knee surgery. I also found interesting his choice of filters and the air intake design on his unit.
When reading about Mr. Wags’ shop air cleaner, I found an entry from Patron which prompt me to write him for advice. He suggested I pose my question to the entire LJ community in a blog which in turn will allow him to post some ideas into this entry, as I understand it.
Here’re some of my questions, would a plywood construction be strong enough to serve as an off feed table, or should I build it around a 2x frame? Any experience with reusable filters anyone? I think I would like to incorporate one in the project if possible and feasible. I think Mr. Wags used a cloth/triple bag one. My table saw is a contractor style a bit older Delta. I would like to build the table to fit between the arms where the fence ride to the right of the table. It would likely need “wings” to open and fit over the motor. How would you attach those.
