Cherry Nightstand #6: Carcass Construction

In this installment I’ll be covering the carcass construction which includes assembling the face frame, sides and base. I’m not covering the construction of the face frame because it’s a very simple face frame assembled with pocket screws and glue.

I do want to mention the specifics of how I attached the face frame to the sides. I used Sommerfeld’s 3-Pc Tongue & Groove Cabinetmaking Set to make the attachment.

Below is the resulting joint. Note that the side overlaps the front rather than the other way around. This is because I’m using some molding I routed out from cherry strips on both sides of the frame.

I drilled holes in the bottom rail of the face frame as well as pocket holes on the botton rails of the sides to attach the box to the base.

I used my right-angle drill attachment to put the pocket screws through the bottom rails of the face frame.

In the following picture you can see where I drilled pocket holes in the top rail of the sides for attachment points for the top.

A couple of other things to note. The top and bottom pieces I added to the back for top and base attachment. Also note the rabbet to inset the 1/4-inch plywood I’m going to use for the back.

Here is the completed carcass with the top sitting on it. The top is not attached yet because I’m going to stain and finish it separately.
