Sunday Morning Coffee with Tyler #2

Good morning friends,

It’s a sad day for Tyler.

He was supposed to have a swimming play date today with his Aunt Athena but it was cancelled.

Athena, a 1 1/2 yr. old pure bred Golden retriever was originally given to a poor family to help with a young autistic boy.

I mentioned before that Tyler and Athena’s first owner, a wounded vet were also struggling to get by so it was a nice gesture to give a 700.00 dog to someone equally in need.

Unfortunately, the dog was badly neglected and then sold, even though they had a written agreement to give the dog back if it didn’t work out.

Well, they went to court and got the dog back but she was in bad shape. She had lost a lot of weight and had a large tumor growing in her side which needed to be removed right away. They couldn’t afford to pay for the surgery and put out the word on Facebook.

Our close neighbor and friend, Kim had a Golden named Reggie who had recently passed away and the timing was right for her to get another dog. We told her about Athena and she happily took her in and helped nurse her back to health. The perfect solution for a happy ending.

Last Sunday, we all went for a walk to the park and for a swim. They were running as fast as they could, playing together, swimming and chasing sticks for two hours. They went home and slept for the rest of the day, we wore them out!

They had such a good time, we made plans to get together every Sunday morning to walk to the park and play.

But, yesterday morning, Athena was playing with another friend in the park and stepped though a sewer grate and broke her front leg in two places. Poor thing, she’s had such a rough start in life and now, this happens.

I should say, Poor Kim, she just got through paying for the first surgery and nursing her back to health. Athena’s leg was broken pretty bad. They had to bring in a specialist on a Saturday who put in a splint with 9 screws.

She had to spend the night in the hospital but should be coming home today.

Tyler will just have to be patient and give his aunty time to heal.

Bummer for Hunter – he finally had another dog to play with Tyler and help wear him out.

Not easy for an 8 year ol’ dog to keep up with a 10 month old pup.

.
Dogs and kids, always something.

.

I had originally planned to write about my first jobsite dog, Sammy….. a smart dog like no other you’ve met.

A natural born Frisbee dog, he understood many words and silent commands but was fiercely independent.

He was one in a million.

He even made the papers and became quite famous in the small wealthy town of Lake Forest IL.

.

I’ll tell you more about him next week, if you like.

Until then, thanks for reading my thoughts on a quiet Sunday morning while sipping coffee with Tyler,
who is sound asleep under my feet….. my beautiful little boy.

Hope you have a wonderful day with your dogs.
