Dust Collector Project 2014
This my first post in this blog arena and my second project as a member of this site.
I apologize for posting yet another dust collector project but I’ve referenced this is several posts and as someone told me if there are no pictures there is no project. I’ve researched this project using Bill Pentz’s website and a ton of LJ posts.
There are no original ideas in this application of existing technology beyond performing the actual work I’m an integrator of other people’s ideas. For that knowledge I thank everyone I copied.
While the larger cyclones and filter systems were attractive my small space cannot accommodate those accessories.
My existing air turnover filter system works well so this systems primary function is to remove the dust and chips created by motorized equipment. As a secondary use it provides the occasional exhaust for my shop.
Because of the need for exhaust and lack of room for filters I chose to exhaust directly outside my shop.
The exhaust vent is terminated with a larger version of a dryer vent for termination, I figured that I’d deal with any adverse results of the discharge when I started using the system more often. The need to deal with the results became quite apparent when I did a test run and the discharge air hit the mulch. So much for hiding the vent behind a shrub and talk about yellow snow.
Picture #1 Upper Interior

The system is based around the controversial Harbor Freight 2HP Dust Collector with a Thien baffle.
The fan arrangement is reconfigured to keep the motor horizontal yet pull though the vortex section of the unit to utilize the baffle.
Picture #2 Lower Interior

I did not want to raise my assembles to empty the trash bin so I made a sealed chamber for that part of the assembly. I’m using a plastic bin for now until I build a bin with a level window for permanent use.
Picture #3 Inlet Pipe

The end of the inlet pipe has a 45 degree miter to straightens the flow.
header.
Picture #4 Header

My trunk is a simple 4” header with 3” outlets reduced to the various machine sizes by using rubber plumbing fittings. My largest generator of dust and chips at this time is my miter saw which is 4” right out of the end of the trunk.
Picture #5 Cabinet Rear

In order to accommodate this assembly It had to be enclosed in a cabinet “skin” that encroaches on the adjoining 2 car garage. The grille is ventilate the motor with clean air.
Picture #6 Cabinet Front

The front of the enclosure and header does not take too much of the shop space. I do not like the appearance of the particular brand of hose but it will have to do for now.
If you want any details please send me a PM.
Thanks for looking,
RMC
