Finally got started on a box im making for my wifes mother’s ashes, i spent 9 hours on a sunday with spalted maple and my scroll saw and every evening the following week with a set of palm carving chisles and alot of patience, time to break grain on the ziricota, terrifying prospect on account of the price of the lumber, but…. Sooooooo pretty,
It was originally my intention to dovetail the corners on it as ive never done them before by hand or otherwise and view this skill as a sign of craftsmanship, i stumbled across a forum topic on this site about handcut double dovetails, practical me said wow thats way beyond my level at this point, caveman me said go big or go home…….descided to go big lol, after presenting the idea to my lady she demanded it anyway, i offered to do it with maple accents as the scrolls in the frames of the box are spalted maple wich seemed appropriate untill i showed her a swatch of the zircoteagainst some bloodwood that i had at the shop and she was sold, in my very recent expirience : handcut double doves+inexpirience+2 very hard very brittle species+more ziricote not in the budget= sheer terror …..but why not:-)
