Since taking Jay van Arsdale’s class on introduction to Japanese woodworking, I’ve been itching to find the time outside of class to practice the joinery and techniques he’s been teaching (which have been game-changing for me). Since a lot of what I make is dictated by what wood I have lying around, I decided to take some cupped/warped poplar and walnut to make a small and simple serving tray.
Today I only got around to a basic design in my head, and hand milling the woods flat and roughly to size. Next, I’ll be doing some layout.
